Workshops

Dr. Nuttall teaches applied statistics workshops intended to train substantive researchers on best practices in statistical modeling, including problem-solving during model fitting and manuscript preparation. Workshops consist of pre-recorded lecture videos focused on the conceptual basis of techniques for modeling data accompanied by synchronous (via Zoom) model fitting activities to apply lecture concepts to the real analysis of data with instructor support. Q&A time allows students to ask questions about lecture, activities, or analyses in their own data.

Enrollment includes access to video lectures and all materials for 3 months to support continued learning and asynchronous learning for those unable to attend the synchronous portions of the workshop.

Dr. Nuttall’s summer 2025 applied statistics workshop offerings are described below. Please email any questions to: msuquantworkshop@gmail.com.

Mediation & Moderation Workshop ($400): June 16-June 18, 2025

This applied statistics workshop provides an in-depth overview of modern methods for testing mediation and moderation within the path analysis framework. We will cover methods for combining mediation and moderation (“moderated mediation” or “conditional indirect effects”), longitudinal models, and Bayesian approaches. We will apply these concepts to the analysis of data using software Mplus (no prior knowledge of Mplus is needed). For those familiar with SEM, all models taught can be extended to SEM. We will also discuss best practices for writing papers using these methods.

Lectures will be pre-recorded to listen at your own pace. We will meet via Zoom twice daily for synchronous model fitting activities and Q&A with Dr. Nuttall. These sessions will be 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon at scheduled times (11-12:30pm EDT and 3:30-5pm EDT).

This workshop is intended to be useful for relatively junior graduate students who may have only taken a single statistics course as well as more advanced students who may have already taken Dr. Nuttall’s SEM and LSEM workshops. This workshop is also appropriate for advanced undergraduates working on independent research projects such as honors theses using mediation and moderation models.

If you would like to register for the Mediation & Moderation workshop, complete this form and we will contact you for payment.

SEM Workshop ($650): May 19-May 23, 2025

This workshop focuses on methods for analyzing multivariate data within the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. Example models taught include EFA/CFA, multi-group modeling, dyadic data. We will apply these concepts to the analysis of data using software Mplus (no prior knowledge of Mplus is needed).

This SEM workshop assumes only prior completion of a basic statistics course (i.e., basic regression).

Note to MSU Students: This is a 5 day intensive course equivalent in content to HDFS 961; the workshop course is a good alternative to the academic year course for students who do not have data and hypotheses appropriate for the HDFS 961 project requirement but who wish to gain familiarity with these methods to consider use in the future and/or to be a consumer and reviewer of studies using these methods. For students wishing to take HDFS 962, this workshop fulfills the SEM prerequisite.

If you would like to register for the SEM workshop, complete this form and we will contact you for payment.

Longitudinal SEM Workshop ($650): June 2-June 6, 2025

This workshop focuses on methods for analyzing longitudinal (repeated measures) data within the SEM framework to test change over time. The latent growth curve model (LGCM) for testing change over time is introduced followed by many extensions (predicting change, multivariate LGCM, multi-group LGCM). We will apply these concepts to the analysis of data using software Mplus (no prior knowledge of Mplus is needed).

The LSEM workshop requires basic knowledge of cross-sectional SEM methods (e.g. CFA). Enrollees should have previously taken a SEM course or workshop. Please reach out to Dr. Nuttall with any questions.

Note to MSU Students: This is a 5 day intensive course equivalent in content to HDFS 962; the workshop course is a good alternative to the academic year course for students who do not have longitudinal data and hypotheses (defined as three repeated measurement occasions) appropriate for the HDFS 962 project requirement but who wish to gain familiarity with these methods to consider use in the future and/or to be a consumer and reviewer of studies using these methods.

If you would like to register for the LSEM workshop, complete this form and we will contact you for payment.

Mixture Modeling ($400): June 23-June 25, 2025

This 3-day workshop provides an in-depth overview on mixture modeling (“person-centered”) methods for analyzing heterogeneity in cross-sectional and longitudinal (repeated measures) data. Models covered include latent class analysis (LCA), latent profile analysis (LPA), factor mixture modeling, growth mixture modeling (GMM), and proper inclusion of covariates/class predictors and distal outcomes. We will apply these concepts to the analysis of data using software Mplus (no prior knowledge of Mplus is needed).

The Mixture Modeling workshop requires basic knowledge of SEM methods (e.g., CFA). Enrollees should have previously taken a SEM course or workshop. It is recommended, but not required, that students have basic knowledge of the latent growth curve model (LGCM) given that we will cover GMM, a person-centered extension of the LGCM. As such, Dr. Nuttall’s LSEM workshop (or HDFS 962 for MSU students) or other training in LGCMs would be helpful, particularly for those students most interested in longitudinal data. However, this knowledge is not required. A brief introduction to LGCMs will be provided when introducing GMM.

If you would like to register for the Mixture Modeling workshop, complete this form and we will contact you for payment.
